Our Income tax website has a perplexing error message

I logged into my income tax e-filing account yesterday, and saw this message: "You are not authorized to view this page because either your bank details of your PAN and profile details are incorrect or these details have not been passed onto e-Filing. Please contact the owner of the information for details".

I was completely perplexed. I had filed my taxes correctly, so why this message? I couldn't even access my dashboard and didn't know what to do.

A bit of Googling revealed that few other people had faced the same issue since 2014. One of the answers on a forum said that this message shows up when the website is undergoing some routine maintenance, and we should check back after six to twelve hours.

I logged back in the next day and sure enough, everything was back to normal.

Phew!

Whether it's a routine website maintenance or too many connection requests to the server or because there's an actual issue with the details not matching, I hope the message could be changed to display something that specifies what the actual issue is, so that we could be informed of it and do what is necessary to fix it. For example:
  • If it's routine maintenance or too many connections to the server: "Routine website maintenance ongoing. Please check back after few hours".
  • If it's a problem with the bank details: "Your bank details for <bankName> are incorrect. Please ensure that <problem> is fixed by <solution>".

This is for all of you who were perplexed by this message and didn't know whom to ask. Hope it helped. In most cases, you just have to wait a while before you try logging in again. Otherwise, you can always contact the income tax helpline to find out more.

Update 2020: The issue still seems prevalent, as shown in the comments below. I hope contacting the relevant authority or submitting feedback or submitting a grievance or contacting your bank to mention this problem may help resolve the problem faster.

At the time I wrote this post I wondered if anyone would even find it when they face the problem. Good to see that it's easy to find, and glad it gave you some peace of mind.

I too faced this today. This happens when there is a mismatch in details between Name in PAN and Bank. I updated my first name details in PAN to match Aadhar but it is not matching with what is given in Bank. I contacted Income Tax Help desk, they asked me to write a mail to them with PAN copy, Aadhar copy, Error msg and request letter so that they will disable bank connected high security option for E-Filing and we can then reset option using other security methods

Hi, I am also facing the same issue. After racking my brain for an hour and trying other methods of e-verification, Income Tax website was still throwing me the same message. I bumped into this thread and did the same thing - leaving for the time being and come back later after 12 hours. But still, I am getting that same stupid message. Please help if anyone got a fix to this e-verify issue. Thanks.

Hi, I was facing the same issue. I completed the E-verification using bank account number. Please find the details below.

Generating EVC via bank account
The income tax department allows you to e-verify your return using your bank account. This facility is available for select banks. You can check if your bank offers you this facility or not by accessing the list here.

To verify your ITR using your bank account, you must pre-validate it. Go to the profile settings in your e-filing account to pre-validate your bank account. Enter the required details such as your bank's name, account number, IFSC code, and mobile number. You are required to enter your mobile number that is there is in the bank's records.

The pre-validation will be successful only if your PAN and name matches with the bank account records. Once pre-validation of bank account is done, select 'Generate EVC' option under the 'My Account' tab. A code will be sent to you on your mobile number. Select 'e-verify' in 'My Account' tab and enter the code.

True, I am also trying e-verification via hdfc netbanking and getting the same reply since 19.10.20. However it is working through via SBI, ICICI bank. Problem seems to be with HDFC bank.Don't know how to resolve.

After trying e-verify through HDFC netbanking all these days and nothing changed. I also tried doing through the above mentioned "EVC through bank account number" which I had tried earlier, like 4 days ago. I was still getting the same message and unable to generate EVC. Now, after reading the above message, I tried it again and got the EVC and as well as e-verification done. Thanks for the post - Anonymous, I was feeling very uncomfortable of not able to do e-verification sooner.
